Sing Out! The Folk Song Magazine
Stephanie P. Ledgin
One of the most enduring qualities of traditional music is the "family tradition"
portion of its definition. Carrying on in the spirit of his mother, the legendary Ola Belle Reed,
Dave Reed has released a portrait of his faith in words and music in an album of what he calls
bluegrass Gospel. Yet these songs have a wider reach; they reflect a colorful tapestry of
roots-edged music. Eleven songs were composed by Dave, while six are from Ola Belle's songbook.
With a message throughout of looking to a higher power, Reed sings praises in a lively,
lilting style. He gives a powerful nod to his mother's music, completing and continuing the
family legacy. His clear, resonant voice is immediately engaging.
There is a special delight in Dave's portrayal of his mother's songs. "Every
Step" seems to say "Listen, Morn, this is for you." He gives a powerhouse,
bluesy rendition of her "I Was Hungry." It exemplifies both his and his mom's
versatility and little care for genre boundaries. Dave delivers Ola Belle's "My
Epitaph" in a rich resonant voice, while a real treat is the hopeful "Tear Down the
Fences."
Turning to Dave's originals, "Power Supply" is a delightfully novel take on
communicating with God, whose telephone line s never busy. "Preacher Song" and
"Guidng Light" are strong statements, rendered in a light pop style. "Paid in
Full" is decidedly newgrass. All make you smile and leave you wanting to hear more. "He
Threw Away the Mold" Dave dedicates to his wife.
"Noah's Animals" is a creative retelling of the Bible story, with sound effects of
ark building, rain pouring down and animals braying and barking. Dave goes out with a roaring
banjo instrumental, "Rejoice." The entire CD is pure joy, inspiring and appealing to
any age.

Sing Me A Song
Words and Music by Ola Belle Reed
DAVE REED vocals, guitar, mandolin
Won't you sing me a song
Sing me a song
When I come to the end of my journey
And I know that it won't be long
Oh till I cross death's silent river
Don't cry, just sing me a song
As I travel through this life
Midst the struggle and the strife
Though the way may be weary and long
And as I search for happiness
I can find peace and rest
When I sit down to sing me a song
Won't you sing me a song
Sing me a song
When I come to the end of my journey
And I know that it won't be long
Oh till I cross death’s silent river
Don't cry, just sing me a song
When I reach the other shore
And meet love ones once more
And I join in the happy angel throng
And if I could forever sing
Let the halleluiahs ring
I’ll be singing a halleluiah song
Won't you sing me a song
Sing me a song
When I come to the end of my journey
And I know that it won't be long
Oh till I cross death's silent river
Don't cry, just sing me a song

My Hero
Words and Music by Dave Reed
© 2003 DRP Music (BMI)
DAVE REED vocals, guitar, mandolin
Everybody has someone they love
Love and affection, love they can feel
Did you ever have heros when you was a child
Some were fiction and some were real
And as the years start passing by
And things have changed, do you wonder why
Do you have your first hero, is he real to you
Or has he just faded like morning dew
I still have my hero
He set me free
My hero is Jesus
I know he loves me
And when life is over and we have passed on
And all the ages have come and gone
Will you have your hero and what's he done for you
When 10,000 years are over
I'll still have my hero
He set me free
My hero is Jesus
I know he loves me, I know he loves me
Guiding Light
Words and Music by Dave Reed

DAVE REED vocals, guitar, banjo
There is a straight and narrow path
That keeps us pure and free
And it is a path of peace and joy
So come and go with me
There's a light that shines so bright
That guides my way toward home
And when I feel that I can't take another step
He leads me on, and on and on
I was deep and bound in sin
And walking in the night
But then the light came unto me
And Jesus is that light
There's a light that shines so bright
That guides my way toward home
And when I feel that I can't take another step
He leads me on and, on and on

"Since migrating from Cambridge,
Mass to Nashville some three decades ago, Mark Brine has carved out a strong
reputation as an uncompromising traditionalist on the country music scene which
has made him one of the elder statesmen of Americana."
-- Shaun Dale, Cosmik Debris Magazine
"I could listen to him sing
all night long he does a good job that boy does."
-- Roy Acuff, Ernest Tubb Midnight Jamboree
"A fine young man who I think
has a great future."
-- Hank Snow,
Grand Ole Opry
"Brine could easily have been added to the cast of 'O
Brother, Where Art Thou' without raising an eyebrow. He belongs
to that group of artists whose individuality and quirkiness consign
them to the periphery of what's commercially viable. But God bless
him for not just being another cog in the musical wheel."
-- James McSweeney, Flyin Shoes

"Brine writes wonderful story songs about ordinary people
and ordinary places. To tell these stories, Mark has a voice that is
as comfortable as a favourite coat."
-- Pete Smith, Country Music Round Up
"I think what makes Mark Brine such
a gifted songwriter/storyteller is the fact that he seems to be such an
obvious fan of many genres of music. He's someone who is like a sponge
when it comes to reintegrating influences into his own work."
-- Gail Worley,
Ink 19
"His career has pursued the path of a truly independent artist -
someone who follows his soul and does things his own way his ability
to write and produce has made his name synonymous with quality."
